Additional Absence Reporting Information
- Multiple-day absences must be entered individually.
- Emails for absences will not be accepted.
- Please allow 72 hours for excuse notes to be coded in Infinite Campus.
- Parent notes will only be accepted within the same 6-week grading period in which the absence occurred. Doctor notes can be taken at any time.
- Absences due to an extended illness may require a statement from a physician.
- Attendance in High School is taken in each block. If a student misses more than 15 minutes of a block, then he/she is marked absent for that entire block.
- If a student is marked absent but believes this is a mistake, they must talk to their teacher first. If the teacher made an error, they would need to ask the front office to correct it. If a student has a substitute, they will still need to talk to their teacher first.
- The Board reserves the right for the school to request additional documentation to excuse an absence.
Early Dismissal
For early dismissals, please send your student with a note stating the date, time of dismissal, and parent signature. Students should bring the note to the front office before the school day begins so they can be given an early dismissal pass to leave class at the appointed time. Emails will not be accepted to request early dismissal. Phone calls will only be accepted in the case of an emergency.
Educational Opportunities
Some absences may be excused if they qualify as an educational opportunity. To qualify, the following procedures must be followed:
- Obtain prior approval: At least two weeks before the upcoming absence, create an informal proposal and email it to your assistant principal. This proposal should justify how the absence is educational in nature. Athletic events, camps, and competitions are not typically approved unless there is a strong rationale supporting how the experience is educationally enriching (e.g. participation by students in career-related activities, visits to museums or historical sites, cultural or language experiences, etc.) 2) Submit Reflection: Following the absence(s), the student will need to complete the Educational Opportunity Reflection. Email the completed reflection to your assistant principal within one week of returning to school. When the reflection is approved, the absence(s) will be coded as excused. *Please note, educational opportunities can only be used for two absences per semester, or a total of four per school year. If you have additional questions about this policy, you may reach out to your assistant principal or to Noah.Setzer@ucps.k12.nc.us, our AP who oversees attendance.

Exam Exemptions
- Exam exemptions only apply to teacher-made tests and are not available in courses that require the administration of an End of Course or State Mandated final exam.
- Teacher-made exams are defined as tests designed and graded by a UCPS teacher of record for the purpose of assigning an exam grade to a student.
- Students enrolled in AP courses will still be required to take the AP exam. Students are expected to take all other assessments given at the school.
- To be exempt from taking the teacher-made exam, the student must have an average of 90 or above the week before the administration of the exam.
